The weather is finally heating up and soon you could have to turn over to your air conditioner. Along with arranging your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Airmax Long Island Inc, there are a few other items you can do to keep comfy and save money this season.
During the in-between season in Long Island, those far too few spring days, you may use ceiling fans to keep cool. Did you know that using your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more comfy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning correctly. Here’s a couple things to remember:
Raise Your Thermostat
This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t impact your comfort level that much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re lowering the period of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.
Adjust Air Direction
Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust depending on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to ensure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually decrease the air temperature, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than what the thermostat says.
Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There
Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan produces you’re wasting energy by operating your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
