Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Long Island just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area regularly to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have built up throughout the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Long Island will probably go up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Airmax Long Island Inc in Long Island, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or adding a new system.
