The dipping temperatures in Long Island aren’t leaving, and while it’s simple to fantasize about the warmer temperatures, it’s critical to remember that you can remain just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a big role in this, which is why it’s so important to keep up with annual furnace service.
We do have to bring up the fact that there are few things that will provide as much to your comfort this winter as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service should be completed annually. After all, who wants to spend a long winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them warm the entire time?
Already done with your annual furnace service? Here are a couple other tasks you can do to help keep your home comfortable:
- Energy audit — most energy companies will offer an energy audit for your home so you can uncover areas that need fixed. You could be surprised what areas are allowing hot or cold air to sneak out.
- Weatherstripping — regardless of which door it is, doors allow the opportunity for a lot of cold air to come in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you could still have air making its way indoors. Check to see if your weatherstripping is in-tact or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be permitting cold air inside. If you notice any problems, weatherstripping is easy to swap and may take care of the problem.
- Recessed lighting — one of the most common areas for air leaks may be your recessed lighting. Depending on how old your lights are, they could be letting all the hot air in your home escape through your ceiling. Fixing this is as easy as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.
These three tips are just the beginning, but do note that there are other simple fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy jobs to accomplish on the weekend.
